Use Your Freezer!

March 27th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Every guy (or at least every guy reading this) has a freezer and odds are he probably just uses it for meat, frozen vegetables, etc. It’s understandable to only put things you buy frozen into the freezer, but why not use it for more? Mark has graciously supplied a couple of easy ways to utilize your freezer to be a better bachelor.

Use your Freezer!

Recently I’ve realized that your refrigerator freezer is a lot more
useful than some people realize. Many foods that I used to normally
store on the counter or in the fridge can go just as well into the
freezer to preserve freshness longer. Here are two things I started
storing in the freezer recently.

1. Peanuts. I read about this on a blog somewhere, and a few days
ago I put my jar of Planter’s lightly salted peanuts into the freezer.
Within hours they were chilled and actually tasted a lot better! The
next day the nuts were frozen. In frozen state, they really do taste
better. The nut is a lot harder so you can munch on it longer in your
mouth. Peanuts don’t go bad quickly so the main benefit here is just
a more delicious and fun snack.

2. Bread. I learned this trick from my dad. When I saw a loaf of
bread in my parent’s freezer, at first I thought this was a sign of
their old age. I told my dad ‘Hey you accidentally put the bread in
the freezer!’ only to be corrected when he said ‘Yea, I do that now,’
and went on to explain.

I’ve been plenty pissed before with having a loaf of bread get moldy,
since I only buy food for myself. With bread in the freezer it should
easily last for several weeks, if not months. After you put your
sandwich together, which is easier since the bread is solid, you can
stick it in the toaster as normal which will bring your bread back to
‘normal’ after a standard toasting. Since I’ve been doing this I’ve
found that the sandwich meat still heats up enough for my taste and
the cheese starts to get melty. If you take your sandwich to work,
school, or whatever you should find that the frozen bread helps keep
your sandwich nice and cold until lunch time.

(Bread thaws quick too!  Just set it out on the counter. - ZGS)

So there are just two things you can stick in the freezer that you
might not have thought about before. There are plenty more foods that
you can store in the freezer as well, I’m sure. Chocolate and other
candies also work great in the freezer. And if the hard disk is
starting to go bad in your computer, sticking it in the freezer for a
few hours is known to give it a little bit of extra life left so you
can get your data.

One tip, it is better to put your frozen bread in a plastic bag when you are thawing it out on the counter top. Otherwise the edges might get a bit hard and dry.
