Friday evening after attending a reading at the Book Loft by David Sedaris, some friends and I were strolling along looking for a place to eat. We chatted about where to go but did not really have a place in mind. We were walking along Kossuth St when we stumbled upon The Olde Mohawk. It is an assuming little place, right at the corner of Mohawk St and E Kossuth St, two blocks off 3rd in German Village. The food was good, they had Elevator Brewery on tap, and the atmosphere was as one imagines a neighborhood bar should be.

As I mentioned before they had Elevator Brewery on tap, so I enjoyed a glass of Buckeye Red while we browsed the menu. The menu is pretty standard bar fare with a focus on the various sandwiches they offer. They offer several varieties of ruebens but one sandwich in particular caught my eye, the well named “Mother Mohawk”.
The Mother Mohawk features chicken salad and roast beef on rye bread with swiss cheese and a side of caraway horseradish sauce. I’ve never thought to combine roast beef and chicken salad before. I like both roast beef and chicken salad and they are both good between two slices of bread, but together? I had to try it.

Sorry for the poor quality of the picture, but it was a dark bar and all I had was my blackberry. The sandwich was not extremely large but it was of ample size. The chicken salad was very chunky (how I like it) and the roast beef was nice and tender. Overall the two balanced each other surprisingly well. The horseradish sauce was just spicy enough to make for a pleasant but not overpowering addition to the sandwich.
I do like how the sauces are served on the side with a large number of their sandwiches to facilitate easy dipping. One of my friends had the turkey rueben and it came with honey mustard as the side. Not what one would normally expect to have on a rueben but she seemed to enjoy it.
On the whole I’d recommend The Olde Mohawk and will probably go back if I’m down in the area again. They had some interesting bratwurst based items that I’d like to try the next time around.

woohoo SGK lives again. Nice write-up, that sandwich sounds awesome. I don’t think theres anything roast beef wouldn’t go with.
